Vladamir Putin
Vladimir Putin is President Boris Yeltsin's chosen successor who was re-elected in 2004. Until his appointment in August 2000, he was a little known figure who had spent most of his career working for the Soviet security service, the KGB, including several years as a spy in Germany. In a matter of weeks he had become the most popular politician in the country, and by the end of the year, the acting president.
