Marie Antoinette, born Archduchess Maria Antonia of Austria, and later Marie Antoinette, Queen of France and Navarre is perhaps best remembered for her legendary excesses, and for her death by guillotine at the height of the French Revolution. A leading fashion icon and trendsetter of her time, traditional histories have portrayed Marie Antoinette as a shallow, weak, and self-indulgent person. Recent years, however, has somewhat changed that view. In 1933, Stefan Zweig wrote a biography of her, praising her extraordinary courage during the final years of her life.
