Emily Dickinson
Although virtually unknown in her lifetime, Emily Dickinson, together with Walt Whitman, has come to be regarded, as one of the two quintessential American poets of the 19th century. Noted for her unconventional broken rhyming meter and use of dashes and random capitalization as well as her creative use of metaphor and overall bold, innovative style, she has written almost 1,789 poems during her lifetime, but only a handful published during her lifetime. However, just as readers and scholars alike have been absorbed in the study of her poems, her life itself has generated as much interest and speculation. Often characterized as an eccentric recluse who refused to leave her father’s home during her adult years, Emily Dickinson is in herself a mystery, yet to be uncovered.
