Biography of Tony Blair
Tony Blair (born 6 May 1953) is Labour’s longest serving Prime Minister of 10 years, ending 18 years of rule by the Conservative party with his 1997 landslide election victory. Born in Edinburgh, the Scottish Prime Minister won his first seat in parliament for Sedgefield in the 1983 General Election aged just 30. After a speedy rise through the ranks, in 1992 his predecessor John Smith promoted Blair to Shadow Home Secretary. In 1994 following the sudden death of Smith, Blair won leadership of the party with a sizeable majority giving him the power to push ahead with party reforms under his trademark “New Labour” brand, abandoning decades of Labour policy to become more of a central party.
