Rottgen Pieta

Gothic Art

Likely influenced by the troubles of the period, this wooden statue depicts the moment after Christ is taken down from the cross by his mother- the pieta, a common subject for sculpture. In this sculpture the anguish of Mary is harshly evident and Jesus hangs limp and distorted in her arms in a way that echoes the works of Giotto and the mannerism to come. The brutatity of his death is not glazed over in a placid way but instead it is emphasized in the blood marrring his body and the tears marring hers.
